Faraz Jaka has been a professional poker player for over 18 years. During this time he has made it to 6 WSOP Final Tables, he was the WPT Player of the Year for Season VIII and he has earned over $12M. Early in his poker life Faraz was notorious for playing suited pocket cards and often taking down large pots in the process. As a result his friends labeled him "the Toilet"...

Question: What are the most important things to consider when 3 betting preflop?

Faraz: Here is how I teach my students to structure their thought process when deciding whether or not they should 3 bet preflop…

3 betting for value

  • Will worse hands call you?

  • If they 4 bet, are you happy to continue in the hand either as a call or a 5 bet all in?

3 betting as a bluff

  • Can you get several combos that dominate you to fold?

  • Is this hand good enough to call?

If your hand doesn't fit into either of these categories it means you should be flatting or folding your hand. Generally, if worse hands won’t call your 3 bet but you get to keep worse hands in by flatting, then you have a good flat candidate. By worse hands I mean hands where we are dominating their kicker. For example, if middle position open raises off 40 big blinds and we have AJ suited to their left in the cut off, we want to just call. Because if we 3 bet we would make them fold hands like KJo, ATo, etc... so we are in a sense flatting as a trap. Where as AK it makes sense to 3 bet because worse hands like AQ and AJ will call our 3 bet.

We asked ChatGPT, “what is the best way to neutralize an aggressive poker player?”

Here is what we got:

Neutralizing an aggressive poker player can be a challenging task, but it can be done by employing a few strategic techniques. Here are some of the most effective ways to neutralize an aggressive player:

  1. Tighten up your starting hand range: When playing against an aggressive player, it’s important to tighten up your starting hand range and only play the strongest hands. This will help you avoid losing chips to their aggressive betting and raise strategies.

  2. Pay attention to their tendencies: Observe the aggressive player’s betting patterns and tendencies, such as the hands
